This is a very special event to kick off Melbourne year, at one of our favourite venues. 2017 marks the 40th year of Melbourne Poets Union and we are just getting warmed up. Come help us celebrate with two of Melbourne’s best, Abe Nouk and Lisa Gorton.
There will also be an open mic section on the night with a $100 prize for the best poem.24
Abraham ‘Abe’ Nouk is the founder and director at Creative Rebellion Youth.
Spoken-word poet, hip-hop fanatic, MC and an author whose craft developed from a realisation of the freedom of speech, Sudanese-born Abe was illiterate when he and his family arrived in Australia in 2004, as UN High Commission designated refugees. Since realising his illiteracy, he began reading and writing to improve his lyrical content for hip-hop music when it became apparent to him that ‘the best thing you can do for yourself is to feed your mind.’
Abe went on to become third in the Australian National Poetry Slam and self-publishedHUMBLE, his first collection in 2013.
Lisa Gorton lives in Melbourne. Her novel The Life of Houses (2015) won the 2016 NSW Premier’s People’s Choice Award. Her first poetry collection Press Release won the Victorian Premier’s Award for Poetry; her second, Hotel Hyperionwas awarded the Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal (both were published by Giramondo).
Gorton edited the 2013 Black Inc. Best Australian Poem santhology. She studied at the University of Melbourne and Oxford, where she completed a doctorate on John Donne’s poetry and prose.
